“The real enemy of each human being is not death but inhumanity”.
Professor Christiaan Barnard

Professor C. Barnard

I dedicate this project post mortem to Professor Christiaan Neethling Barnard, whom I got to know in Europe, before I ever travelled to the African continent. It was him, who opened my eyes for the problems of the poor and underprivileged people of Africa.

I was impressed about the passion in his life long fight against the Apartheid regime in South Africa. He never got tired to travel abroad to continue his private campaign against it. Throughout his life, he used his fame to benefit the poor and oppressed people of South Africa as they struggled under apartheid, because he felt great compassion for human beings of all races and nationalities.

After his first successful heart transplant he became known as the "film star surgeon". He was loved by his patients throughout the world, hundreds of whom were treated free of charge and hated by many others who were jealous of his instant success.

Professor Barnard was an outspoken opponent of South Africa's laws of apartheid, and was not afraid to criticize his nation's government, although he had to temper his remarks to some extent in order to travel abroad. Rather than leaving his homeland, he used his fame in order to campaign for a change in the law.

I am still proud, that I could work for him in this campaign and he trusted me to launch very confidential details about the recent regime to the International media.

He taught me a lot. I am still grateful for that experience.
